Water Fire Extinguishers – Fire Class A

Red Banded:-

Water fire extinguishers are suitable for fires involving solid combustible materials such as wood, paper, straw, coal and textiles. The water reduces the temperature of the fire and creates a barrier between the burning fuel and oxygen in the air. There are two types of water fire extinguisher. One is air pressured and employs the procedure of air pressure to spurt water from the container to the flame. The second type contains pressurized nitrogen and is mixed with water and is sprayed as fine droplets or a mist instead of a strong jet.

Blue Banded:-

are safe to use on most kinds of fire, including flammable liquids and electrical risks due to the conductivity of the dry powder. It works by overlaying the fuel with a layer of powder which separates the fuel from the oxygen around it and puts the fire out.

Foam Fire Extinguishers – Fire Class A and B

Cream Banded:-

The Aqueous Film Forming Foam or AFFF, has become the most popular all rounder extinguishers. A blanket of foam is formed on the surface of a burning liquid and it penetrates and seals the fire which protects against re-ignition.

Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers – Fire Class A and F

Yellow Banded:-

were developed for the sole purpose of fighting deep fat cooking fires. The wet chemical results in a thick soapy foam which smothers the fat and creates a barrier against re-ignition.

CO2 Fire Extinguishers – Fire Class B

Black Banded:-

are advised for every property as these are the only ones recommended for electrical fires and are suitable for flammable liquid fires also. This works by starving the fire of oxygen and puts the fire out.
